About Us
Working for Alberta’s Sheep and Wool Producers
In a growing industry, with huge potential, Alberta Lamb Producer supports every producer with advocacy and the information, training, and resources necessary to succeed.
As an organization run by producers, for producers, ALP provides every member with an opportunity to have a positive influence on the industry as a whole. In fact, the participation, contribution and feedback of members, is helping to fuel the steady growth of Alberta’s sheep and wool industry.
ALP is responsible for a variety of programs all aimed at supporting producers and ensuring the continued growth and profitability of the industry.
ALP is a central point of contact for all industry participants. Your check-off provides an infrastructure for producers to collectively have a voice and a positive influence on the industry as a whole.
Our Commitment
Alberta Lamb Producers together with industry stakeholders will foster a renewed enthusiasm, pride and energy to nurture the growth and prosperity of the sheep industry in Alberta and in Canada.
These are exciting times for the Alberta Sheep industry.
- Consumer demand is rising steadily, as people discover the mild flavour and tender texture of lamb, and Alberta lamb in particular.
- Canadian lamb currently fills only 50% of the current market, despite the fact that restaurants and retailers alike are keen to serve local product.
Alberta Lamb Producers’ mission is to ensure that all Alberta sheep producers have the information, training and resources necessary to take full advantage of this enormous growth and potential.
You will find this website packed with information and guidance, whether you are an established or a prospective sheep producer. If you are looking for specific information, please visit our site map which will help you to find exactly what you seek.
Strategic Plan
In 2008, based on industry research, producer surveys and market analysis, we built a strategic plan.
- Industry and funders commended the strength and professionalism of the plan – it is key to securing organised and directed external funding.
- It demonstrates a new maturity and drive in ALP.
- In June 2010, we determined the 2008 strategic plan was over 80% completed and refined and updated it to 4 key strategies and a commitment to complete outstanding projects.
Key Strategies:
- Empower producers to improve production efficiencies and profitability to increase the quality and quantity of lamb in Alberta.
- Engage producers.
- Collaborate with government on behalf of producers to advance the industry.
- Continue to develop a strong cohesive organisation that works efficiently and effectively.
Advocacy
Alberta Lamb Producers is the voice of the Alberta sheep industry to the Alberta government and the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency. It represents you in the Canadian Sheep Federation to the federal government and in national programs. To be a serious, respected and well-organised industry, you need strong representation that listens to producers and is a two-way conduit for information.
Alberta Lamb Producers Checks Back with Producers
Thanks to all those who completed the independently conducted survey on Alberta Lamb Producers in January 2011.
This second producer survey (original October 2008) was part of ALP’s ongoing commitment to communicating with members and industry.
Its purpose was to find out how members thought Alberta Lamb Producers was doing, particularly:
- What they think ALP is doing well and what can be improved upon.
- Their opinions on, and perceptions of, the market and industry as a whole.
- To elicit feedback on specific proposed initiatives such as advertising & education needs
The information and analysis gathered from this process will help ALP make more informed decisions in support of the organization’s strategic focus and decisions.
Overall, in every area measured statistically, there is an improvement in value perception or utilization. That is a strong indication that what ALP is doing is meeting with producer approval.
A few interesting facts of those surveyed:
- 86% support ALP’s initiative to increase productivity
- 95% are optimistic about where the industry is going (up 50% from 2008)
- 69.5% use the internet frequently
- 53% would try on-line education
- 70% would like to see ALP offer advertising – now we do!
