Dear Alberta Lamb Producers,
As many of you are aware, there has been significant discussion in livestock circles about proposed changes to livestock traceability requirements recently circulated by CFIA.
Alberta Lamb Producers has been in discussion with other provinces, producers and has reached out to CFIA regarding the proposed changes. At this stage, the proposals have raised more questions than they have answered. ALP is engaging with CFIA to better understand the intent of the changes and assess potential impacts to producers, including financial implications, technology requirements, and the additional time and effort that may be needed for implementation in Alberta.
As announced by CFIA on January 10, the proposed changes have been paused pending further consultations. At such time more information becomes available, ALP will share updates with producers.
In the meantime, ALP encourages producers to monitor CFIA announcements and to participate in any surveys or opportunities for stakeholder input.
An effective traceability system is important, and to achieve its intended outcomes, any system must be practical and workable for the industry to implement.
Sincerely,

Martin Winchell, Chair
Alberta Lamb Producers
